“A ray of sunshine in human form whose mission in life is to cast those rays on patients”, that is how colleagues from St. Catharines describe Anthony Diaz from an article released by the niagarahealth.on.ca.

Anthony Diaz is an alumnus of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Class 2011 and is now a registered nurse working at the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario Canada since 2018. Recently he became part of the Hospital Information System (HIS) transition team for Mental Health and Addictions, training his colleagues on the system ahead of go-live in November.

Diaz has taken on various leadership roles throughout his time at the hospital, including clinical coaching and creating seminars for colleagues to better support patients. He is admired and loved by both patients and staff as he diligently worked with kindness, understanding, and unmeasurable care.

Recognized for his diligence and positive attitude, he was named as one of the 25 Nursing Excellence Award Recipients in 2023. His dedication and passion to serve others fueled his drive to step up to the challenge and embodies what it means to be a team player and goes out of his way to ensure that both patients and colleagues alike feel cared for.

Born from a “family of nurses”, Diaz’s inspiration and role model was his mother, a retired university professor who took on a nurse-like role in the family. Seeing her mother tend to his grandparents and their family illuminated a new perspective for Diaz, revealing the significant role a nurse can play as a vital source of support.

He stresses out that kindness and patience is really important when working with patients in mental health as it can make all the difference in this line of work. It is essential to handle patients with care and kindness but Diaz says that it is also important to direct it to oneself. “It’s essential to prioritize your well-being, seek support when needed and create a healthy work-life balance” he says.
